If you’ve never been to our practice before, here are two easy routes you could take, using the Downers Grove Public Library as a starting point:
- Get onto Main St heading north, then turn left onto Walter Payton Memorial Hwy. Turn left onto Wilson Ave, and we’re in the first building on the right.
- You could go around the other way instead, getting onto Main St, then turning left onto Burlington Ave, right onto Forest Ave, and left onto Warren Ave. Turn right onto Belmont Rd, then right again onto Walter Payton Memorial Hwy. Turn right into our parking lot two buildings after Planet Cars. Our building is a 1-story with white walls and a brown roof.
How Much Local History Do You Know?
Downers Grove, established in 1832, traces its origins to Pierce Downer, a pioneering farmer from Rutland, New York, who was originally from Vermont. The village derives its name from the striking grove of old-growth bur oak trees that once dominated the local savanna landscape, providing a distinct backdrop to the area’s development. The community quickly grew with the arrival of families such as the Blodgetts, Curtisses, Blanchards, Stanleys, Lymans, and Carpenters, who were primarily migrants from the Northeastern United States and Northern Europe.
By 1839, the village was further enriched by the arrival of Reverend Orange Lyman, a Presbyterian minister, and his wife Maria Dewey Lyman, who are credited with constructing what is believed to be the first residence in Downers Grove. The educational foundations of the village were laid with the establishment of the first schoolhouse in 1844. Shortly thereafter, in 1846, the Blodgett family built one of the first homes in the area. Both the Lyman and Blodgett residences hold significant cultural value today, as they were built by abolitionist families and functioned as stops on the Underground Railroad, marking Downers Grove not only as a place of historical settlement but also as a beacon in the fight for freedom.
